Gensun Casual Living’s outdoor furniture are powder coated to ensure a long-lasting finish and superior protection against the elements. But what, exactly, is powder coating and how is it different from painting? Read on to find out.
Powder coatings are thermoplastic or thermoset polymer resins mixed with pigments, curatives, and other ingredients that are melted together, cooled, then ground into a fine powder. This free-flowing powder is applied electrostatically via spray gun (typically) to bind with the “grounded object – usually metal. Since it’s such a highly efficient process, powder coating generally uses less material than its spray paint counterpart.
After application, metal pieces are heat-cured, which allows the polymers to “flow evenly on the object’s surface to form a near-impenetrable skin.
Another bonus to powder coating is even coverage and a smooth finish. When paint is applied with a spray gun, the results are often uneven coating and running or sagging. This necessitates multiple coats. And because liquid spray paints are solvent-based, the application produces considerable off-gassing in the form of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Translation: nasty fumes.
