The direct – vent gas fireplace was invented by Heat ‘n Glo about 30 years ago. Through very careful mechanical engineering, a fireplace was designed so that it did not need a vertical flue that ran to the roof. Rather, combustion was carefully controlled so that the gases could escape through a short horizontal pipe and would thus require a venting package that resembled what you have on a clothes dryer. This breakthrough meant that a fireplace would be much less expensive, since the cost of the flue was eliminated, and it became much easier to install as well, since there was no longer a need to run a long flue pipe – this was usually the hardest and most expensive part of the installation.
