A properly built flue systemn is typically brick on the outside with a clay tile liner on the inside. Over time, it is possible that the liner can crack. This does NOT necessarily mean that you need to reline your flue. Unfortunately, there ARE unscrupulous tradesmen and chimney sweeps who try to scare people into relining flues with stainless steel pipe that can be very expensive – in some cases $5000 or more. Do not be stampeded into contracting to have this done. Make sure that you have good references on your contractor, and that you trust him. Certainly, there are many instances where the flue DOES need to be relined. Just be sure that your flue is one of those cases.
